Universal Design and Assistive Technology

Glenn Hedman

Great strides have been made in the application of universal design principles. Results include many more products which can be used by individuals with disabilities and which prevent injury, and an increasingly accessible outdoor and built environment. But there remain challenges where new work is needed. Three areas are discussed. First, the clinical work of Rehabilitation Engineers and the venues where their work is able to flourish are highlighted. Second, access to Assistive Technology devices and accessible housing in the wake of Hurricane Katrina is discussed. Finally, the aspects of the built environment which enable safe and efficient evacuation by high-rise building occupants, including individuals with disabilities, are presented.
