Technology Based Assistive Solutions (TBAS): challenge for the future.

Harry Knops

Around 2002 we had the shift of paradigm of the description and context of disability and handicap from a medical/functional oriented thinking (ICIDH) into a more social/participation thinking (ICF). Strongly related to this development is the position of AT. Historically positioned as any system or product to neutralize, compensate, the loss of function (ISO9999). In the context of ICF AT is positioned as an environmental factor. This has to  lead to a new definition of AT. In this presentation I want to  make an effort to present a possible a new definition of AT, but also describe the potential of AT in the new context.

TBAS
AT in is self makes no sense. It is always used in a context with other environmental element to create a solution for older people and people with disabilities.
So I want to introduce to you a definition of AT that is based upon the policy document of AAATE in 2003, the development of technology, used policies and the development of the ICF. To my opinion AT should be transformed into:

Technology Based Assistive Solutions

Technology special developed or general available used in a context of user needs, environmental possibilities, Financial structures, Professional intervention a.o. to create a solution for the problems of older people and people with disabilities to participate in daily life.

Challenge for the future
Using this definition challenges are there for the future:

  • To create a more individual solution for people
  • To combine mainstream and specific solutions into a continuum of solutions
  • Optimilisation of the usage of technology
  • New markets for industry
  • New fields for innovation

Consequences for the future
If we want to take the challenges we also have to face the consequences of this and this means that we have to put focus on:

  • A better understanding of the role of technology in the context of other resources contributing to solutions.
  • Stimulate cross sector innovation with new design principles including design for all, technology design etc.
  • Teach and train professionals to use technology
Stimulate industrial development by product and market innovation
