ICT Standardisation Policy with regards to e-accessibility

European Standardisation Policy is a tool to support the implementation of other policies or legislation. The legal framework for it is Directive 98/34. The European Commission is not directly involved in the standard making process because standardisation is industry and market driven. However, the Commission has mainly two possibilities to get the standardisation deliverables needed for its policy objectives: the financial support for standardisation work in relation to the Commission's ICT Standardisation work programme or issuing a mandate to the three recognized European Standardisation Organisations (CEN, CENELEC, ETSI). A mandate is a request for a specific standardisation deliverable related to a specific policy actions and needed (e.g. Mandate 376 on European accessibility Requirements for Public Procurement of products and services in the ICT domain).
