FATRONIK-Tecnalia is a private non-profit making Foundation. That is to say, an organisation that pursues ends of general interest, in this case scientific research and technological development.
It needs to be clarified that this fact does not imply the entity's income being guaranteed. Like any company, FATRONIK-Tecnalia has to ensure that its economic objectives are fulfilled and that it generates a surplus at the end of the year.
The fact that it is non-profit making means that the annual economic surpluses can not be shared out, but rather reinvested in FATRONIK-Tecnalia's technological activity.

FATRONIK-Tecnalia's activity revolves around two basic focal points.
This model aims to find a balance between the carrying out of knowledge generating projects to the service of companies, where a real transfer to the business fabric occurs.
It is precisely this model that distinguishes a Technology Centre, that carries out applied research, from a University or an Engineering Firm. Research carried out in the University (basic research) is mainly centred on generating knowledge, and not so much on applying it. The other extreme are the Engineering Firms, dedicated to putting knowledge into practice, but not to the search for new technologies.

The rest (50%) comes from industrial research projects. It is the companies that contract FATRONIK-Tecnalia to carry out R&D projects, under different methods: contracted projects, shared risks projects, long term agreements…
