This project aims at innovating radically the European sheet metal sector by providing this industry with an optimized, flexible, safe and environmental-friendly forming technology based on the incremental forming of the metal sheet.
The new technology will replace traditional processes in the mid term for short and medium sized batches and rapid prototyping applications. In the long term, it will pave the way for fundamental changes of manufacture, enabling the production of advanced design products, whose manufacturing for current technologies is cost and quality ineffective.
Traditionally, sheet metal components are produced by stamping processes or deep drawing, which need big and costly dies and presses. Main advantages of this approach are the high productivity and short production time. This fact makes these processes only effective for long batches and economically unfeasible for short or medium sized series.
Through the proposed incremental sheet forming process, an economical solution could be given to the companies producing short series which are now manufacturing their components in non-metallic materials or changing their original design to avoid the problems linked to traditional stamping processes.
The technology developed in the frame of this project will have immediate application in many industrial sectors, as automotive or aeronautic industries, which use forming processes to produce sheet metal components.
Moreover, industrial sectors demanding high customization in their projects (and, therefore, working with low series production) can also be benefited from the results of the project. These sectors could include design furniture art industries
